A Brief History of Renton

Renton history

Renton has been a center of manufacturing for over one hundred years. It’s located on the southern shores of Lake Washington, and it provides access to many different types of transportation corridors–from rivers, highways down through railroads or skyway bridges.

Birth of Renton

Long ago the Duwamish Indian tribe build a village at the present site of Renton, near the confluence between the Black and Cedar rivers. At one time the Cedar River flowing from southeast to Lake Washington and Black River carrying runoff into White river was an important resource for people living there. The two rivers merged at Duwamish river which then flows north towards Seattle before being changed by human engineering later.

In 1853, Henry Tobin’s discovery of the Duwamish River and its meeting point with Lake Washington was a pivotal moment for him. He quickly saw that this location would make an excellent mill site, as well access points from which businesses could operate year-round in both commercial markets or recreation sectors.

Next door to Tobin, Dr. R.H Bigelow had coal on his property that he could mine for use in the lumber mill next door. The discovery of a coal seam on Dr. R.H Bigelow’s property provided him with an opportunity to build his business which generates revenue from timber sales in the mine shafts below town limits, while also providing the necessary fuel for local homes and industries like steel mills that were established later after railroads arrived through this area.

The introduction of the mill by the White settlers had a significant impact on Indian life. The Indians were fascinated by these machines at first, but they eventually cause havoc to their way of living. The Indian Wars occur as some tribes tried to fight back. The wars lasted for only a few months during 1855 and ended with the settlers’ victory, as they succeeded in their mission of resettling all Indians within this territory.

Tobin’s mill was destroyed during the short war, settlers were driven away and he died of illness. Warriors in the Cascade Mountains killed some backers while Bigelow decided not to stay because dreams for success weren’t cultivated by him but someone else would come along later who had more tenacity than they did.

In 1857, a landowner named Erasmus Smithers met Tobin’s widow Diana. They fell in love and soon married each other! Between them ended up owning nearly 500 acres of property that would eventually become known as Renton Washington.

The town of Renton, WA was named after Captain William Renton who founded the famous Port Blakely Mill on Puget Sound. He purchased this mine from Smithers and had ample financial backing to expand it even further.

The Black River dried up after the Montlake Cut was completed in 1916, near Seattle cause the topographical change in Renton. The canal between Lake Washington and Lake Union caused its water level to fall by nine feet, which led to this manmade disaster never being seen again.

With the large influence of Boeing Renton Plant during World War II, Renton’s success was inevitable. In 1941 they moved in to establish themselves and set up shop starting out with producing B-29 planes at six per day which increased greatly by 1944 when they were going through 30 tanks every month all done mostly by women as most men had gone off into war.
